Academic / College Readiness Programs
AVID
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Edison Middle School is a National Demonstration site for the AVID national curriculum. As an AVID school, all EMS staff use best practice WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies to help students build self determination and a college and career growth mindset.
In addition to school-wide initiatives, students can apply for the AVID elective program. This program is designed for students in the academic middle and first generation college students who are interested in boosting their academic potential. AVID connects families with information about how to access college readiness opportunities. The AVID program includes an elective course that helps students explore college options through projects and field trips. Students also practice WICOR skills necessary for honors and college level coursework. AVID gives self-motivated students the extra support they need to be college ready. This program continues through the 12th grade at both Central and Centennial.
Please contact Mrs. McGreevy, AVID counselor, for more information about how to join the AVID elective program.
